Supported by:

Developed in partnership with the NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU), the newly updated ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People Renewal’ eLearning course is a convenient way for you to refresh, consolidate and update your understanding of safeguarding at a time to suit you.

An alternative to attending a face-to-face workshop or online classroom, you can complete this fantastic course from the comfort of your own home – on a tablet or PC – so you can dip in and out to suit your lifestyle, while still keeping track of your progress.

The newly updated course content places greater emphasis on the need for coaches to reflect on what it means to be a child today, and to consider the implications for your coaching philosophy.

You will learn the importance of person-centred care and the profound benefits of putting the child’s voice at the heart of every session.

Every child has the fundamental right to play, the right to be heard, and the right to develop. This eLearning course will help you explore how to embed child-first principles to empower you to fulfil your safeguarding responsibilities by demonstrating a robust level of care that ensures the welfare and happiness of every child and young person.

The renewal module now hosts child voiceover, in combination with the adult voice, to drive an emotional connection to the audience, putting the child at the heart of the learning.

Learners will also have access to a downloadable digital action planner and interactive PDF (that can be printed or completed digitally) to enable you to take away key learning and notes, and use within your coaching environment.

Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People Renewal has been endorsed by CIMSPA and has been awarded 2 CPD points.

* Check with your governing body of sport for further information, and to ascertain whether or not it recognises completing the eLearning as an appropriate way to renew your safeguarding training.

Topical Module Options

There are three versions of this course to choose from. They all contain the core safeguarding refresher module, plus they each have an additional module with a focus on a topical aspect of safeguarding and protecting children in sport.

Each version has the same price, and equal weighting, and each is worth 2 CIMSPA CPD points. It is purely down to your choice as to which version you are interested in exploring.

Read the summary about each version below and choose the option that’s right for you.

The d in d/Deaf isn’t a typo. A person who identifies as being deaf with a lowercase d is indicating that they have a significant hearing impairment. Many deaf people have lost their hearing later in life and as such may be able to speak and/or read English to the same extent as a hearing person.

This module has an updated look and feel, includes the voice of the child and has updated content.

Throughout this module you will:

  • explore and learn about the different forms of abuse and additional considerations for deaf and disabled children
  • understand how to recognise signs of abuse and what to do if there are any concerns
  • work through in-depth scenarios, where a coach is encouraged to work with the disabled participant and their parent/ carer to reach a solution
  • explore reporting mechanisms and where to seek support for additional information, concerns or when reporting an emergency.

This module will help you:

  • to look at how digital communication and social media present some fantastic opportunities to engaging children
  • understand and minimise the risks to children’s safety and welfare
  • to recognise the opportunities and dangers of different digital communications including the potential for grooming, cyber bullying and accessing inappropriate content
  • to identify best practice for using digital media in your role.

This module will help you to:

  • understand how parents, carers and other volunteers can make a hugely positive contribution to children taking part in sport and physical activity
  • understand how behaviour impacts on children and young people
  • look at the techniques that can have a positive impact
  • look at how to encourage parents, carers and other adults to contribute positively and inclusively to a safe sporting experience.

Full course details

  • The eLearning is suitable for you if you’re a coach, student, sports official, sport leader, parent or volunteer, aged 18 or over and have already attended the ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children’ (SPC1) workshop.

As this is a refresher course, it is not appropriate if you have not had previous safeguarding training or are under 18 years of age.

For anyone in a role with regular or significant responsibility for children (for example coaches or club welfare officers), initial safeguarding training should be interactive or (as a minimum) include a significant interactive element. Click here for the latest NSPCC guidance on minimum safeguarding training.

While this module will increase your confidence when it comes to communicating with children about sports sessions and provide some core safeguarding training, the certificate of completion you will receive alone does not make you a safeguarding expert.

Governing bodies of sport set their own standards for safeguarding training (some do not recognise online training such as this as an appropriate way to renew your safeguarding training). You must always check what requirements are in place with your NGB/deployer.

NSPCC and UK Coaching provide a suite of interactive safeguarding & protecting children training – both face-to-face and live virtual – which may be more appropriate to your role than this refresher course.

  • The course should take around 2 hours. This can be completed in as many sittings as you wish.

  • You have access to the course for 12-months after enrolment.

  • Our experienced advisors are on hand should you need any help with navigating through the course.

  • For the best experience, we recommend you complete it on a desktop.

If you have a visual impairment, we have designed the course to work with screen readers.

There are some videos in the course that feature audio, which we have included transcripts for to aid people with hearing impairments.
