British Cycling invests in sport-specific First Aid training with UK Coaching
British Cycling is working with UK Coaching to provide First Aid in Sport and Physical Activity training for staff and volunteers, helping build the confidence and practical skills needed to respond effectively in emergency situations.
First Aid education facilitates safer experiences for everyone involved in sport and physical activity. That's why British Cycling is working with UK Coaching to provide tailored training for its workforce.
Designed specifically for sport and physical activity settings, UK Coaching’s First Aid pathway combines essential knowledge with practical, real-world scenarios, ensuring learners can apply their skills in environments relevant to their roles.
The programme combines online learning and face-to-face delivery to cover key areas including patient assessment, CPR, the recovery position and managing incidents such as choking, bleeding and shock. Participants are encouraged to develop both the technical knowledge and confidence needed to act when it matters most through hands-on activities and discussion-based learning.
Training can be licensed by organisations or delivered by experienced UK Coaching tutors.
Drawing on real-life scenarios from across sport, tutors help learners understand how First Aid principles can be adapted to the situations they may encounter in their own environments.
Phil Ball, National Volunteer Manager at British Cycling, highlighted the value of the sport-specific approach.
"We got a real opportunity to chat about the course content with the tutor. He gave us a chance to put that into real life situations that we come across within cycling and how we can adapt it to our environment."
Alongside building practical skills, the training also provides an opportunity for participants to share experiences.
Trish Quirk, Learning and Strategy Development Lead for Coaching and Participation at British Cycling, said: "What really stood out was the opportunity to be with other people in our sport.
"We had practical opportunities to do the exercises and to work together as a group."
