Creating Space to Think: Reflections from a Year of Coach Development
Coaching in performance sport rarely stands still. The days are full – training sessions, competitions, planning, problem‑solving, supporting athletes. Coaches spend so much of their time doing that opportunities to pause and truly think can feel like a luxury. Creating those moments of space is at the heart of our work.
As we reach the end of another cycle of coach development programmes, it feels important to take a breath and reflect.
What have we learned? What has mattered most? And how have these environments supported coaches to grow, both personally and professionally?
One of the most powerful aspects of our programmes is bringing coaches together from across sports and performance environments.
Coaches from 33 different disciplines made up 2025’s cohort.
The Performance Pathway Coaching Programme offers a mixed‑sport learning space where coaches at different stages of their journey explore the realities of performance coaching side by side.
Stepping outside familiar structures can be transformative for coaches. Challenges that might have felt personal suddenly become shared. Experiences once carried quietly become opportunities for connection.
Having the chance to reflect with peers who truly understand the pressures of performance sport opens avenues for fresh insight.
Normalising the Realities of Performance Sport
Across the year, we’ve seen how quickly a sense of isolation can dissolve when coaches are invited into a supportive learning environment.
Hearing a colleague from another sport talk about similar pressures – selection dilemmas, system complexity, managing expectations – helps coaches recognise that they are not alone. This shared understanding creates the conditions for thoughtful reflection and exploring the edges of current practice with real curiosity.
And when ideas and experiences travel across sports, they enhance individual practice and seed change across the wider performance system.
Championing Visibility and Community for Women in Coaching
Alongside our pathway programmes, we continue to support female coaches through the Elevate Programme and the Women in High Performance Coaching Programme. These spaces reinforce something we’ve long known. Visibility, connection, and community are essential for women working in performance sport.
The women involved are leading teams and influencing future generations of athletes. But they are also navigating challenges that can be specific to their contexts. Creating spaces where they can learn together and support one another has been incredibly powerful.
This programme is such a valuable opportunity for me to learn from experienced mentors and peers and to gain insights I can bring back to my club and sport. It’s been incredibly special so far to build a support network of female coaches and mentors who understand the unique challenges and opportunities we face.

Supporting the Wider Coaching Workforce
Our work this year has also extended beyond performance coaches.
Talent webinars have offered accessible learning for the coaches and teachers supporting aspiring athletes. Learning Lab webinars and Coach Development Conversations have supported the coach developer workforce – recognising the critical role they play in shaping coaching practice.
Investing in those who support coaches strengthens the entire ecosystem.
A Community Defined by Openness and Curiosity
Across all this, one theme has stood out: the openness of coaches, coach developers, and leaders to keep learning.
Amid performance pressures, individuals across the coaching system have brought generosity, curiosity, and a willingness to challenge their thinking. Their commitment is what makes these learning communities so special.

Looking Ahead
We want to thank everyone who has contributed their time and energy to these programmes. The impact of this work is shaped by the people within it.
We’re excited to continue creating spaces next year where coaches, developers, and leaders can step back, connect, reflect, and continue strengthening coaching practice across the system.
Applications for the 2026 Coach Development Programmes will open on 1st June.
