Progress for Women in Coaching: Keeping the Bigger Picture in Focus

News News

by Emily Handyside

FIFA’s latest move to increase the visibility of women in coaching is a positive step. But lasting progress depends on more than representation alone.

FIFA has announced a new initiative requiring at least one female head coach or assistant coach across all women’s football tournaments, from youth to senior level. It is a clear statement of intent to accelerate progress and increase the visibility of women in coaching.

You can read more about the announcement via the BBC Sport article on FIFA women coaching initiative.

At UK Coaching, we welcome this step forward.

Progress in coaching has often been slow and shaped by structural barriers. Actions that increase representation can help challenge perceptions, open doors and create momentum across the system.

However, representation alone is not enough.

For change to be meaningful and sustained, we must focus on the conditions that allow women not only to enter coaching, but to develop, progress and stay.

What needs to happen next

Equal access to development opportunities

Women need consistent access to high-quality learning, mentoring and practical experience at every stage of their coaching journey.

Fair and transparent recruitment

Clear, open recruitment processes are essential to reduce reliance on informal networks and create more equitable opportunities.

Flexible and sustainable pathways

Coaching needs to better reflect real life. Flexible pathways that support parenting, caring responsibilities and career breaks are key to retaining talent.

Safe and supportive environments

Strong safeguarding systems and confident, capable organisations are critical to ensuring all coaches feel safe, valued and supported.

These are the foundations that turn increased representation into long-term impact.

From learning and development to community and advocacy, our focus is on creating environments where women can thrive and lead with confidence.

A step forward, with more to do

FIFA’s announcement is an important step. It signals intent and creates momentum.

But lasting change will come from addressing the wider system.

By focusing on access, opportunity and support, we can ensure that progress is not just visible, but sustainable.

That is how we move from representation to real impact.
