Team England Futures Puts UK Coaching Learning into Practice at Commonwealth Games

As the 2026 Commonwealth Games begin, UK Coaching and SportsAid are celebrating the impact of Team England Futures – a programme designed to prepare athletes and coaches for the opportunities and challenges of a high-performance Games environment.
As the 2026 Commonwealth Games gets underway in Glasgow, a group of coaches are taking the next step in their development journey on one of sport's biggest stages.
UK Coaching has partnered with SportsAid to support the coach development strand of Team England Futures (TEF), a Sport England-funded programme that provides emerging athletes and coaches with insight into the realities of a major multi-sport event.
Designed to bridge the gap between pathway experiences and high-performance environments, the programme combines in-person learning, digital development opportunities and guided reflection to help coaches build the confidence and capability needed to thrive in complex performance settings.
UK Coaching is thrilled to have contributed expertise in coach learning and development while working alongside SportsAid and a network of specialist contributors to support the next generation of high-performance coaches.
Supporting Coaches in Their Development
A foundation of the programme was a dedicated Coach Development Day, hosted by Senior Coach Developer, Matthew Eggleton-Wood.
The event was designed to help coaches prepare for the transition from learning environments into preparation camp and, ultimately, the Games themselves.
Working alongside SportsAid and a range of expert contributors, coaches were pushed to explore real-world challenges, reflect on their practice and consider how they would respond in high-pressure environments.

The day formed part of a wider programme that SportsAid has built around a series of learning themes and development priorities, helping coaches understand what successful performance environments look like and how they contribute within them.

Team England Futures has been carefully designed to help future multisport athletes and coaches perform better in a major Games. Working with UK Coaching helps us cast a wider net as these sporting leaders take knowledge back into their individual environments and positively impact systems, cultures and athletes.

Connecting Learning with Performance
One of the programme's defining features is a focus on helping coaches connect learning with action.
Working with SportsAid, UK Coaching supported the creation of an extended learning journey that includes a co-branded digital learning environment and curated resources.
The Coach Development Day acted as a bridge between theory and practice, helping coaches move from concepts and frameworks into the realities of preparation camp and competition environments.
Sessions explored leadership, decision-making under pressure, safeguarding and wellbeing in high-performance sport, and the unique challenges of a multi-sport Games environment, drawing on expertise from practitioners, researchers and coach developers.
UK Coaching also facilitated reflective practice sessions to help coaches maximise learning from both the preparation camp and in-Games experience.
Learning Across Sports
One of the most valuable aspects of Team England Futures is its ability to bring together coaches from different sports and backgrounds.
The Coach Development Day welcomed 20 coaches representing 14 sports, creating opportunities for conversations that may not happen in a competition environment. Coaches explored shared challenges, exchanged ideas and reflected on how lessons from other disciplines might strengthen their own practice.

The programme was deliberately designed to challenge assumptions and encourage curiosity.
Coaches were asked to consider how they would respond to the realities of a Games environment through scenario-based discussions – from leadership and communication challenges to athlete welfare and navigating uncertainty under pressure.
Bringing together our partners at SportsAid, UK Coaching and Team England allows us to leverage unique insight and access to produce a truly meaningful programme that supports coaches in line with our ambitions within the 2032 High Performance System Coaching Strategy

Building a Learning Ecosystem for Coaches
The Coach Development Day represented one element of a broader learning experience that UK Coaching helped facilitate.
Coaches have been supported with structured learning journeys, bespoke resources and UK Coaching Premium Membership, providing ongoing access to professional development opportunities and content beyond the Games cycle.
This integrated approach ensures learning is sustained rather than confined to a single intervention. Coaches can continue to revisit key themes and explore development opportunities to build on insights gained through Team England Futures long after the Games have concluded.
