UK Coaching congratulates history-making coach Wiegman

UK Coaching has congratulated the history-making Lionesses head coach Sarina Wiegman following the Lionesses Women’s Euros triumph

The Lionesses coach, the focus of much of yesterday's homecoming celebrations, became the first ever England football manager to win senior back-to-back major tournaments following England's dramatic penalty shoot-out victory against Spain on Sunday.

The historic coaching achievement comes at a time when latest figures from UK Coaching show a decline in the number of female coaches, with a particular drop in the number of female volunteer coaches. UK Coaching's Gender Spotlight report earlier this year revealed a 6% decline (from 44% to 38%) in the number of female coaches across all levels but a 10% decline (from 40% to 30%) in the number of female volunteer coaches.

Further research conducted by YouGov on behalf of UK Coaching in during UK Coaching Week in June, highlighted the barriers faced by mums - a key potential part of the female volunteer coaching workforce - in taking on coaching roles at their children's sports clubs.

The research revealed that over a third (34%) of mums who aren't currently involved in their children's sports clubs want to give coaching a try but are put off by barriers including a lack of confidence and knowledge of individual sports. It also highlighted that 4 out of 5 (83%) mums do not play any role or have any involvement in their children's sport club.

Emily Handyside, UK Coaching’s Coaching Lead, said:

Everyone at UK Coaching congratulates Sarina on her remarkable achievement as a female coach. To coach the Lionesses to back-to-back major tournaments is phenomenal and inspiring for female coaches across all levels of sport. We hope her achievement but also the way she has coached the Lionesses, creating the right team culture and focusing on coaching the individual rather than the sport, will be the catalyst for more women especially those who want to start their journey as a volunteer to get into coaching.

UK Coaching recently reaffirmed its commitment to support and work together with the sector to address inequalities and barriers faced by female coaches working at all levels and is set to develop an action plan against this key developing issue. UK Coaching's Women in Coaching Hub provides resources and advice to support women and mums on their coaching journey including those taking their first steps into volunteer coaching.
