Case Study

Jack Parker’s apprenticeship journey demonstrates the value of a well‑supported pathway from learning to employment in the outdoor activity sector.

The Challenge

Apprenticeships in the outdoor activity sector require flexibility and clear coordination between multiple partners. Apprentices must balance learning and assessment with work responsibilities, while employers need reassurance that final assessment accurately reflects real‑world competence.

Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre sought:

  • A structured apprenticeship pathway aligned to industry demands
  • An end‑point assessment process that reflected the realities of a commercial outdoor environment
  • Clear communication and flexibility around assessment logistics

The Approach

Jack joined the Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship at Mount Batten Centre after spotting it aligned with his long‑term career ambitions. Over the course of just over a year, he developed the technical and professional skills required to succeed in the role.

1st4sport supported the final stage of the apprenticeship by delivering a structured, independent end‑point assessment that brought together all elements of Jack’s learning. Working collaboratively with the employer, the assessment process was designed to be:

  • Fair and consistent
  • Sector‑specific and realistic
  • Flexible enough to accommodate operational challenges

The 1st4sport team were very helpful and collaborative in terms of the end-point assessment and understood the complexities of a commercial business. They understood the logistical difficulties for the Outdoor Activity Standard. Things can change just hours before an EPA is due to take place, and 1st4sport took all those challenges on board. - Sam Waites, Watersports Activities Manager at the Mount Batten Centre

The Apprentice Experience

For Jack, the apprenticeship proved transformational.

He described the experience as both personally and professionally life‑changing, helping him improve his confidence, wellbeing and overall outlook.

Crucially, the combination of on‑the‑job learning and a clear assessment endpoint gave Jack clarity about what was expected and a tangible sense of achievement at completion.

"To be honest, my apprenticeship has been life-changing... the best year of my life.

"It's had an amazing effect on my mental health. But it's not just that. My physical health has improved tenfold and my confidence has come on in leaps and bounds.

It has completely changed me as a person.

"The skills I’ve learnt are incredible. And whilst learning, I also got paid - which was a bonus!"
