Revamped RFU Talent Platform Powering New Generation of Female Rugby Players

News News

by Blake Richardson

The modernisation of the specialised coaching platform reflects the ongoing strategic partnership between the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and UK Coaching.

By nurturing gifted athletes through structured development pathways and accessible training resources, the RFU aims to grow a deep and sustainable pool of talented players – an essential 'rose garden' of potential – that can sustain international success and increase participation at all levels of the sport.”

Martin MacTaggart RFU Player Pathway Manager

As part of its strategic partnership with the RFU, UK Coaching has worked with governing body to design a modernised online coaching platform that supports the future of women’s rugby.

This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to growing the game at all levels, providing coaches with the tools, insights, and development opportunities they need to help them thrive.

The RFU Talent Platform has become a cornerstone of the national player pathway, empowering female coaches, expanding leadership opportunities for women, inspiring grassroots participation, and laying the foundations for long-term international success by supporting the development of young female players.

You speak. We listen.

This latest evolution of the RFU Talent Platform marks the second phase of a growing partnership between UK Coaching and the RFU.

The first iteration – a co-branded dashboard launched in 2022 – was designed to support coaches on the Talent Development Pathway. Within just three months, 180 of the 200 enrolled RFU coaches had accessed its resources, highlighting the appetite for targeted, accessible learning.

Building on that success, UK Coaching has worked closely with the RFU to redesign the platform based on direct feedback from coaches. By listening to their challenges and understanding their development needs, the UK Coaching team reshaped the user experience:

  • producing a welcome video with RFU Player Pathway Manager Martin MacTaggart that speaks directly to coaches
  • reordering priority resources
  • and tailoring content to reflect both individual coaching goals and RFU programme priorities.

People-Centred Design

With a strong emphasis on inclusivity, the RFU Talent Platform is designed to support coaches working across all demographics, particularly those developing female athletes within the County U16 and U18 Girls Player Development Groups.

The upgrade offers a sleek, intuitive hub packed with high-quality resources. These tools help coaches deliver impactful, confidence-building sessions that nurture the next generation of rugby talent, while also supporting the growth of female leaders in the sport.

From structured curricula that guide players through the fundamentals of passing, tackling, and game awareness, to e-learning modules that support reflective coaching and informed selection decisions, the RFU Talent Platform integrates our expertise in learning design and user experience and serves as a vital support tool and a one-stop shop for coach development.

The feedback from coaches has been overwhelmingly positive,” says MacTaggart. “They’re engaging more deeply with the platform, and we’re seeing real improvements in coaching practices and player development.

“This collaborative redesign has made the platform more intuitive, more relevant, and more impactful – ensuring that coaches feel supported, engaged, and empowered to deliver meaningful player development.”

Relevant, Easy to Access, Simple Navigation: A warm, personal welcome that goes beyond introductions; spotlighting hot topics to shape programme priorities for coaches; and seamlessly integrating partner resources in a format that aligns with our style.

Coach Development in Full Bloom as Red Roses Inspire a Generation

The platform includes free access to the Learning Zone – an exclusive feature available only to UK Coaching Club Premium Members, which RFU Talent Platform users are automatically enrolled in.

This adds another layer of value by providing informal learning and professional development opportunities that complement on-pitch training.

This holistic approach reflects the RFU’s commitment to nurturing knowledgeable, self-aware coaches who can guide players with confidence and care.

It’s not just about delivering better sessions, it’s about nurturing confident, reflective coaches who can inspire the next generation of players,” says UK Coaching Partnership Development Manager Dave Reed.

With the Red Roses having captured the hearts of the nation during their phenomenal Rugby World Cup success in September, the timing couldn’t be better.

The RFU’s strategic investment in grassroots talent continues to grow the player pyramid, deepen the talent pool, and ensure that every young girl with a passion for rugby has the opportunity to thrive.

Driving Long-Term Change

The RFU Talent Platform complements wider support mechanisms implemented by the RFU, such as the ‘Every Rose’ strategy, which runs from 2021 to 2027, prioritising the growth of the women’s game and the development of female coaches before and beyond the 2025 Rugby World Cup.

As part of its long-term investment in women’s rugby, the RFU has created a comprehensive ecosystem for coach development. This work is explored in greater detail in our feature: RFU Leading Charge for Gender Equality in Coaching.

Challenges remain, of course. Keeping platform content fresh and engagement high will require ongoing effort. But with plans for expanded offerings and feedback-driven updates already in motion, UK Coaching is well positioned to meet those challenges head-on.

As Sport England continues to champion inclusive, grassroots development, the RFU Talent Platform stands as a shining example of what’s possible when innovation meets intention.

As UK Coaching and the RFU have demonstrated through this online initiative, it’s not just about building better players. It’s about providing wraparound developmental support that builds a better future for the sport at all levels.
