Creating a Safe and Welcoming Environment for LGBTQ+ Communities
Developed with the team at Energise Me, the Active Partnership for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, we explore the importance of creating a welcoming and safe environment for LGBTQ+ communities
Creating a welcoming environment for your participants is the first step in developing your relationship. Explore the six principles and consider how you would apply them to the coaching situations.
This dynamic reflection experience - using the voice of LGBTQ+ participants to guide your learning - will help coaches support and encourage LGBTQ+ participation in physical activity and sport. Through this experience you will have the opportunity to explore a number of real-life scenarios and pick up some “top tips”.
In this learning experience you will explore:
- Why it is important to support and encourage LGBTQ+ participation in physical activity and sport.
- Creating Welcoming Environments.
- Role Models.
- Stereotypical views, behaviour and language.
- Challenging behaviour.
- Promoting inclusion.
- Your space.
- Next steps.
Inclusivity and creating inclusive cultures is everyone's responsibility. Unfortunately, LGBTQ+ people are less likely than heterosexual people to do enough exercise to maintain ‘good' health (Pride Sports 2016).
Packed with six different activities, this learning tool will help coaches and other volunteers reflect on their current activity and sports environments, enabling them to create more inclusive spaces.
The experience is intended to grow your understanding of how to support and encourage LGBTQ+ participation in physical activity and sport.
It is self-paced and lasts approximately 45 minutes. You will be able to access it whenever you want, at a time that fits in with your lifestyle.
Guided reflection experience
Many barriers which LGBT young people face include policies and the visibility of a welcome environment, changing facilities and spaces for hanging out whilst off the field of play, previous experiences at school or in community clubs and role models."
