Duty to Care: Safe to Practice
Embed a culture of safety in every aspect of your practice
Explore howGuidance to help you foster a culture of safety by understanding and implementing safe practice principles in your coaching
Welcome to the Safe to Practice pillar of our Duty to Care Hub. Here, you’ll find an introduction to our learning resources on the subject, as well as access to the Safe to Practice Knowledge Check – a tool designed to test your understanding of this crucial topic.

What do we mean by safe to practice?
In most sports and physical activities, inherent risk and danger are simply part of the game. Coaches are legally responsible for mitigating these risks as much as possible and ensuring the safety of their participants, regardless of the setting in which their sessions take place.
This includes creating and maintaining safe and secure coaching environments, making the best use of facilities and resources, conducting risk assessments, providing first aid, managing behaviour, and making decisions to protect both you as a coach and, critically, your participants from danger and injury.
How can you help prevent and manage concussions? How do you facilitate a return to sport following a long lay-off due to injury or a long-term health condition? How far should you push an athlete training for a competition?
These significant questions around practising safe sport deserve thorough answers. Use the resources in our Safe to Practice pillar to learn how to adapt to individual needs and circumstances, effectively address risk, and provide support to prevent injury and aid recovery.
We’re here to help you provide targeted support to your participants, allay any safety fears they may have, and give you peace of mind over insurance implications in the knowledge you are fully compliant with best practices and legal requirements.
Topics you will learn about to help you cultivate a culture of care include designing safe activities, creating safe environments, preventing and managing injury, understanding key legislation, and concussion guidance.
