Supporting Specific Needs

Adapt your sessions to prioritise inclusion

To support specific needs:

  • Build an understanding of disability sport. Make sure your practices are inclusive and that you’re offering a safe, supportive environment.
  • Gain insight into neurodiversity to ensure that your sessions are appropriate for people with conditions such as ADHD and autism.
  • Develop your communication skills. The confidence and knowledge to communicate with people that have specific needs is crucial to developing inclusive sessions.
  • Understand the barriers to participation in sport and physical activity that people with specific needs face. A keen understanding can help you mitigate their effects.
  • If you have an interest in coaching people in prisons, build effective relationships with prison staff. They can support you on a day-to-day basis and be a key advocate for your efforts.
