How Playground Games for Adults Created a Community

Article Article

by Matt Scott

What happens when adults are given permission to play? Gareth Williams discovered that playground games can do much more than spark laughter – they can build confidence, connection and positive experiences of physical activity.

When we think about play, we often think about children. But what if play could be just as valuable for adults?

In this video, primary school PE teacher Gareth Williams shares the story of play_folke, a community initiative that brings people together through the simple games many of us remember from childhood. What began as an experiment to see whether playground activities could work for grown-ups has evolved into something much bigger: a welcoming space where people can move, laugh, connect and enjoy being active without pressure or expectation.

Gareth's experience highlights an important principle of Purposeful Play: play creates positive experiences of movement. People are often more willing to take part and come back for more if they feel safe to be themselves, free from judgement and focused on enjoyment rather than performance.

The video offers valuable insights for coaches, leaders and activity providers looking to create environments where everyone feels included, engaged and motivated to be active.

What this story tells us about Purposeful Play

Play isn't just for children. Gareth's story shows how playful experiences can help adults reconnect with movement, develop social connections and feel part of something bigger than themselves.

play_folke demonstrates how to create meaningful outcomes far beyond physical activity by placing enjoyment and belonging at the heart of the experience.
